White paper: Edge Architectures for AI and Machine Learning

A new white paper, “Next Generation Edge: Edge Computing Architectures for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Use Cases,” has been published by the OpenInfra Edge Computing Working Group, with contributions from ELASTIC partners.

This publication offers a detailed look at how edge computing architectures are advancing to support AI and machine learning workloads. Bringing data processing closer to where data is generated improves responsiveness, reduces latency, and strengthens data sovereignty.

Unlike centralized AI systems, Edge AI requires careful planning to handle real-time demands, connectivity limits, and security considerations. The white paper explores these challenges and provides guidance for designing scalable, flexible, and secure edge infrastructures.

Key topics covered include:

  • Architectural approaches for distributed edge deployments.
  • Data sovereignty and security, crucial for sensitive applications.
  • Latency and reliability needs, important in industrial, automotive, and smart city contexts.
  • Open source and cross-industry collaboration, supporting interoperable and future-ready solutions.
  • Deployment examples and lessons learned, offering practical insights for organizations adopting edge AI technologies.

ELASTIC’s contribution to this work aligns with its mission to develop secure, efficient, and resilient edge computing frameworks that enable advanced AI-driven services. Through practical demonstrations and collaboration with industry and research partners, ELASTIC supports the development of architectures that can meet high performance and security standards.

This collaborative effort shows how edge and AI can combine to create new opportunities in areas such as automation, mobility, and digital infrastructure. By contributing to this white paper, ELASTIC supports the advancement of practical and trustworthy edge AI solutions.
