Throwback Thursday: ELASTIC at IEEE NetSoft 2024
From 24 to 28 June 2024, the ELASTIC project was represented at the IEEE International Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft 2024) in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The conference is a key event in the field of network softwarization, bringing together researchers and industry professionals working on advances in software-defined networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV), and other technologies for building flexible and efficient network architectures.
Our partner Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) presented their work titled “Measuring the Cost of the Linux Network Stack in Real-Time”. The presentation focused on assessing the performance and overhead introduced by the Linux network stack, especially in real-time environments where timing guarantees are critical.
In many emerging scenarios, such as industrial control systems, connected vehicles, and critical infrastructure, predictable and reliable network behavior is essential. The work presented by POLITO provided valuable insights into how the Linux kernel’s networking components, including packet scheduling and queue management, impact overall system latency and determinism. By using advanced system profiling and tracing techniques, the team was able to quantify delays and identify potential bottlenecks. These findings directly support the design of more deterministic and dependable real-time communication systems, an important technological foundation for ELASTIC’s goal of building robust, secure, and high-performance edge-to-cloud infrastructures, as described in our Research & Innovation section.
The presentation sparked engaging discussions with experts and conference attendees, highlighting the importance of system-level performance analysis in shaping future networked applications. It also offered an opportunity to share ELASTIC’s technical approach and project goals with an international community of researchers and practitioners.
We are proud to see the project’s research featured at such an important event and look forward to building on these insights through future collaborations and technical exchanges.
